Introduction
A current sensor turns the flow of current into a signal the controller can use, so its range, sensitivity and isolation decide whether the measurement is accurate, safe and useful. A BYD current sensor measures the current with a magnetic, contactless principle, which removes the shunt and the isolation amplifier that a high-side design would need. This application note explains the practical rules for selecting and applying a BYD current sensor in a motor, battery or power application.
Why Sense Current
A current measurement turns an invisible flow into a number the controller can act on. It allows a current limit that protects a motor and a driver, a load detection that tells a system whether the load is present or stalled, an over-current fault that shuts down a supply before damage, and a control loop that regulates torque or power. In a battery system it tracks the charge and the discharge, and in a converter it monitors the output. Each of these needs an accurate, stable and safe measurement.
The Magnetic, Contactless Approach
A BYD current sensor senses the magnetic field that the current produces, so the measurement is inherently isolated and free of the insertion loss of a shunt. There is no sense resistor to heat and no isolation amplifier to add, and because there is no contact or wear, the sensor is stable over a long service life, which suits an EV drivetrain or a converter that runs for years. The output is an analog voltage proportional to the current, which an ADC reads directly.
Isolation for Safety
The isolation separates the high-voltage current path from the low-voltage signal path, so a high-side or a high-voltage measurement is safe and the logic is protected. Respect the creepage and clearance on the board and keep the current pins and the signal pins separated, because the isolation is only as good as the layout.
Step 1: Fix the Current Range
Start with the maximum current you expect, including the peak and the transient, and choose the smallest range that covers it with a little headroom. A current beyond the range drives the output into saturation, so leave headroom but not so much that the resolution suffers. Where the current varies widely, consider two sensors in different ranges. A BYD sensor module is offered in several current classes, so match the class to the load.
Continuous versus Peak
Distinguish the continuous current from the peak and the inrush. A motor stall current can be several times the running current, so size the range for the stall and accept the coarser resolution at the running point, or add a second sensor for the fine range. The accuracy is judged at the working current.
Step 2: Choose the Output and the Layout
Choose the analog output and the interface for the ADC, and plan the layout with it. Keep the high-current path wide to keep the loss and the heating low, keep the signal output short and away from the switching nodes, and place the bypass capacitor close to the sensor. Where the sensor output feeds a current loop, keep the loop bandwidth and the sample rate in step with the control rate.
Accuracy over Temperature
The sensor is digitally trimmed and compensated, so the offset and the gain stay stable over temperature with no wear. For a demanding design, confirm the accuracy at the temperature extremes, keep external magnetic fields and high-current traces away from the sensor, and calibrate the offset and the gain at the system level if the accuracy budget requires it.
Applications
A BYD current sensor measures the phase current of a motor drive for the control loop and the protection, the charge and discharge current of a battery for the state-of-charge and the safety, the output current of a converter for the regulation, and the current of a charging system. In each case the isolated, contactless measurement is an efficient and safe alternative to a shunt, and it pairs naturally with a BYD power module and MCU.
Getting Help
If you send your current range, supply voltage, isolation and accuracy requirements and the load profile to our FAE team, we will propose a sensor, help choose the range and review the isolation layout. BeiLuo holds mainstream BYD current sensors in regional stock and ships them with an import declaration, a certificate of origin and a RoHS compliance file, and our engineers will review the choice with you before you commit to production.
